In a recently published study from the Queen Mary University of London, scientists discovered a connection between the length of cilia [hair-like projections for cell movement] on stem cells and their proclivity towards differentiating into fat cells.  By restricting the elongation of stem cell cilia, the researchers were able to impede on the formation of new fat cells. Male Infertility Research Identifies Sperm-Producing Stem Cells.

A new method of identifying sperm-producing stem cells could lead to stem cell treatments for male sterility.

In a recent study conducted by the University Of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, scientists have discovered a rare line of stem cells involved in regulating spermatogenesis [the production of sperm cells].  Furthermore, these stem cells are resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which are toxic to the male germline and common causes for male infertility. Acute Stroke Treatment Utilizing the Patient’s Own Stem Cells

Autologous stem cell therapy has shown significant signs of recovery in acute stroke patients.

In a pilot study conducted by the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, five patients received transplants of their own [autologous] stem cells directly into their brains only seven days after a severe stroke. Although the trial was designed primarily to assess the safety of such a procedure, the patients showed significant signs of recovery considering the typical lethality of the strokes. Scientists have developed a method for increasing the survival rate, and therefore the effectiveness, of transplanted mesenchymal stem cells.

A team of scientists from the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Boston Children’s Hospital have developed a method to increase the survival rate, and therefore the effectiveness, of transplanted mesenchymal stem cells [MSCs]. In an animal model, Dr. Juan Melero-Martin and his team of researchers co-transplanted MSCs with blood vessel-forming cells, enabling the stem cells to survive longer in a patient to reach their full regenerative potential.

Barth Syndrome Studied Utilizing “Organ-On-A-Chip” Technology and Autologous Stem Cells.

Scientists have generated heart tissue on a chip to better study Barth Syndrome.

A team of scientists from the Wyss Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Harvard’s Medical School, Stem Cell Institute, and School of Engineering has created a model to study and develop treatments for the genetic heart disorder Barth Syndrome by utilizing a patient’s own stem cells in conjunction with an organ-on-a-chip.  The chip was outfitted with proteins to mimic the cellular environment of the heart, causing the patient’s stem cells to differentiate into diseased heart tissue.  The tissue was then studied to not only determine the cause of the disease, but to treat the diseased tissue as well. Of Mice and Men: Human Stem Cells Utilized in Animal Model Treatment of MS Symptoms

Advancements in a breakthrough stem cell study may provide new treatment options for MS patients.

A team of researchers led by Professor Jeanne Loring of the Scripps Research Institute have advanced a potential treatment option for autoimmune diseases similar to multiple sclerosis by utilizing human stem cells to reregulate the immune system. In an animal model paralyzed by MS symptoms, the scientists differentiated human stem cells into early stage neural cells that, when transplanted into the spinal cords of the compromised mice, secreted proteins that halted the autoimmune attack and enabled the mice to walk and run again. Leg Injuries Healed With Patient’s Stem Cell Therapy.

A new stem cell therapy allows patients to regrow leg muscle after traumatic injuries.

A research team led by Stephen Badylak at the University of Pittsburgh has used the patient’s own stem cells to help them recover from injuries in which over 50% of their leg muscle was lost. First, they implanted a biological scaffold into the wound.  Then, the patients underwent aggressive physical therapy, which directed the recruitment of stem cells to the site of injury to rebuild properly aligned muscle tissue. By the end of the treatment, patients exhibited muscle regrowth and at least a 20% increase in leg strength. Continue reading

Human Lungs Successfully Grown in Lab via Stem Cells

Scientists may have found a solution for immune rejection of lung transplants.

Researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch have successfully grown human lungs in vitro [in a lab] by utilizing stem cells.  The team of scientists, led by Dr. Michael Riddle, used a donated lung to engineer a scaffold outlining the lung’s architecture.  Then, they seeded the scaffold with stem cells from the donor’s complementary lung to create a complete, functional, and healthy lung.  Continue reading
