The California Institute of Regenerative Medicine has coordinated Stem Cell Awareness day to highlight all of the progress that stem cells already made for patients around the world.

Today, stem cells are rightfully perceived as the future of regenerative medicine, set to bring the marvels of science fiction into reality.  But in looking ahead at all of the promise that stem cells hold for the future, it becomes easy to miss the scientific advances made to date for the millions of people around the world suffering from disease, trauma, and injury.  Thus, today marks Stem Cell Awareness Day: a global celebration of stem cell research coordinated to highlight the treatments and therapies currently in development to create personalized regenerative therapies for patients. Stem Cells Immune to Damage from Leukemia Chemotherapy

Certain stem cells have been found to be immune to the bone-degenerative side effects of chemotherapy used against leukemia.

A research team, led by Dr. Eric Darling of Brown University, has found a potential source of stem cells to protect children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia against the adverse effects of the chemotherapy drug methotrexate (MTX).  Adipose-derived stem cells, which appear to be impervious to the bone-degenerative side effects of MTX, may allow children to undergo the chemotherapy treatment and then regain the lost bone tissue afterwards. Ataxia Study Utilizes Autologous Stem Cells

A University of California PhD student has utilized stem cells to create a disease-on-a-chip model to study Ataxia.

Jackie Ward, a PhD student at the University of California, San Diego, has devised a method for studying rare neurological diseases, such as spinocerebeller ataxia. Ward developed a disease-on-a-dish model by harvesting stem cells from ataxic patients, differentiating them into the type of cell that is degenerated by ataxia, and then studying the progression of the disease. Motor Neuron Development Accelerated by New Stem Cell Technique

A new procedure in differentiating stem cells will accelerate advances in treating neurological diseases.

A team of researchers at the University of Illinois led by doctors Fei Wang, Qiuhao Qu, and JianJun Cheng, have developed a fast and efficient technique for differentiating stem cells into motor neurons.  The researchers added critical signaling molecules and growth factors to the cells much earlier than previous methods, resulting in twice the amount of neurons derived from the cells in half the time. Lower Back Pain Relieved by Mesenchymal Stem Cells [MSCs]

MSC’s injected into the spine caused a decrease in back pain and the need for invasive treatment.

In a recent Phase II clinical study, researchers report that mesenchymal stem cells were successful in relieving chronic lower back pain. The scientists injected MSCs directly into the degenerating vertebral disks of patients suffering from lower back pain, resulting in an overall reduction in the mean pain score, improved function for at least 12 months, and a reduced need for further surgical and non-surgical treatment interventions.

Of the 6 million Americans suffering from debilitating back pain today, 3.5 million are affected by degenerative invertebral disk disease. The results of this clinical trial show that, instead of addressing the symptoms, mesenchymal stem cells are able to treat the source of the pain for long lasting relief. According to lead researcher, Dr. Tory McJunkin, M.D, “This study shows we are progressing toward major advances in pain medicine,”

Artificial Bone Marrow Holds Promise for Leukemia Patients

Artificial Bone Marrow may allow one donor to provide stem cells to help treat a multitude of leukemia sufferers.

A team of scientists from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, and the University of Tubingen have recently developed a prototype of artificial bone marrow. Liver Cell Transplantations Stabilized by Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Mesenchymal Stem Cells were shown to release factors to aid in hepatocyte regeneration.

Researchers at King’s County Hospital, London, have found that co-culturing hepatocytes [liver cells] with human mesenchymal stem cells [The same type found in Dental Stem Cells] improves hepatocyte survival and function.  They found that in the presence of hepatocytes, the MSCs produced pro-survival factors, which supported the growth of the hepatocyte culture. Mesenchymal Stem Cells Prevent Long-Term Damage after Traumatic Brain Injury

Stem Cells are used to regulate inflammation after a TBI.

A study from the University of Texas Health Science Center has discovered a novel function of mesenchymal stem cells in preventing long-term brain damage and inflammation in patients following traumatic brain surgery.  MSCs injected into TBI-mice actually travelled to the spleen to regulate the body’s inflammatory response to the trauma and preserve brain function. Stem Cells Utilized to Target Brain Tumors

Maciej S. Lesniak and Yu Cheng, researchers at University of Chicago’s Brain Tumor Center, are using Neural Stem Cells [NSCs] to target brain tumors.  The neural stem cells, which have a built-in homing mechanism to “sniff out” tumors, are being used to deliver cancer drugs to combat the tumors.  The use of NSCs to treat brain tumors represents a novel use of stem cells and is indicative of researcher’s increasing application of stem cells to develop treatments for previously intractable health issues.  The treatment takes advantage of stem cells role as the body’s natural repair and maintenance mechanism.
